Michael J. Fox (born Michael Andrew Fox on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton) is a Canadian-American actor, author, and activist. He rose to fame in the 1980s through the TV series Family Ties and became an international star with the Back to the Future trilogy. In 1991, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which led him to scale back his acting career. Since then, he has focused on advocacy and medical research, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation, one of the leading organizations dedicated to finding a cure. He is widely respected for both his entertainment career and his activism.
